*_RULING ON UTTERING THE INTENTION FOR ACTS OF WORSHIP_*
*Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah was requested concerning the intention when beginning to do an act of worship akin to praying and many others., do we have to utter it verbally, akin to saying, “I intend to pray, I intend to fast”?*
_He replied:_
_The intention of purifying oneself by doing wudoo’, ghusl or tayammum, of praying, fasting, paying zakaah, providing kafaarah (expiation) and different acts of worship *doesn’t must be uttered verbally,* in accordance with the consensus of the imaams of Islam. Rather the place of intention is the center, in accordance with the consensus amongst them._
_If an individual utters one thing by mistake that goes in opposition to what’s in his coronary heart, then what counts is what he supposed, not what he stated._
*No one has talked about any distinction of opinion regarding this matter, besides that among the later followers of al-Shaafa’i expressed approval of that, however among the leaders of this madhhab stated that this was flawed. But within the dispute among the many students as as to if it’s mustahabb to utter one’s intention, there are two factors of view. Some of the companions of Abu Haneefah, al-Shaafa’i and Ahmad stated that it’s mustahabb to utter the intention in order to make it stronger.*
*Some of the companions of Maalik, Ahmad and others stated that it isn’t mustahabb to utter it, as a result of that may be a bid’ah (innovation). It was not narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or his Sahaabah did it or that he commanded anybody amongst his ummah to utter the intention. That will not be recognized from any of the Muslims.*
_If that had been prescribed then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions wouldn’t have uncared for it, because it has to do with worship which the ummah does every single day and evening._
*This is the extra right view. Indeed, uttering the intention is of irrational considering and falling brief in non secular dedication. In phrases of falling brief in non secular dedication, that’s as a result of it’s bid’ah (an innovation). In phrases of irrational considering, that’s as a result of it is sort of a one that needs to eat some meals saying, “I intend to put my hand in this vessel, take out a morsel of food, put it in my mouth and chew it, then swallow it, and eat until I have had my fill.” This is sheer foolishness and ignorance.*
_Intention is related to information. If an individual is aware of what he’s doing then he has clearly made an intention. It can’t be imagined, if he is aware of what he needs to do, that he has not shaped an intention. The imaams are agreed that talking the intention out loud and repeating it isn’t prescribed in Islam, moderately the one that has made this a behavior needs to be disciplined and advised to not worship Allaah by following bid’ah and to not disturb others by elevating his voice. And Allaah is aware of finest._
