Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful. [4:36] meaning, one who is proud and arrogant, insolent and boasts to others. He thinks that he is better than other people, thus thinking high of himself, even though he is insignificant to Allah ﷻ and hated by people.
Mujahid said that Allah’s statement, فَخُوراً (boastful) means boasting about what he has, while he does not thank Allah ﷻ. This Ayah indicates that such a person boasts with people about the bounty that Allah ﷻ has given him, but he is actually ungrateful to Allah ﷻ for this bounty.
سبحان الله
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “No one who has the weight of a seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” [Ṣahih Muslim 91]
Why? Because this sin, is the direct path of Shaytaan. What did Shaytaan do? Shaytaan committed the first sin, he refused to bow to Aadam عليه السلام because he عليه السلام was made of clay while Shaytaan was made from Fire. So he refused one Sujood out of this arrogance.
Reflect to yourself, how many Sujood for the Lord of the Arsh, have you rejected out of arrogance and forgetfulness that your Sustainer is watching you.
As Allah ﷻ says about such people
اَنْ رَاٰهُ اسْتَغْنٰى
He sees himself self-sufficient [96:7]
You need to realise as Musa عليه السلام was made to realise in Surah Kahf with Khidr عليه السلام, you may have many talents and blessings, but there is someone better than you and more blessed than you. And that you are merely 1 out of however many of Allahs creation, insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
Ya Ibn Adam! what greater punishment can you think of, that is worse than being made to lose the ability to worship and recognise Allah ﷻ even if you prosper in wealth?
