Jesus in Islam

The Quran notes the contention-between the Jews and Christians-regarding Jesus and the differing the Christians fell into regarding-the status of Jesus shortly after his ascent.

The Qur’an clarifies the-truth of that wherein they differed. In this chapter we provide an-overview of the status of Jesus in Islam and next chapter will look in-more detail at-the mention of Jesus and Mary in the Qur’an

Jesus (peace be upon him) Son of Mary (peace be upon her) is a righteous prophet from a line-of Prophets including Abraham, Moses, David and Solomon. He was-miraculously born of a chaste and righteous woman through Allah’s-spoken word (of command) (“Be!”) which instructed Gabriel to-breathe of a created spirit into Mary through which Jesus wasconceived and born

“(And mention) when the angels-said, “O Mary, indeed Allah gives-you good tidings of a word-from Him, whose name will be the-Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary – distinguished in this world and the-Hereafter and among those brought near (to Allah).”
(3:45).

Remember, O Messenger, when the angels said: O Mary, Allah gives you good news of a child who will be created without a father: merely by a word from Allah, such as ‘Be’, and he will become a child by Allah’s will. The name of this child will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary. He will have a high rank ir world and the Afterlife and he will of those who are made close to Allah
(Qur’an 3:45)

Hence, Jesus is the Word and the-Spirit of Allah in the sense-explained: created through Allah’s uncreated word of command for-the sending of a spirit to serve as the mechanism for his conception-without any male-intervention.

As confirmation of his prophethood,he spoke whilst in the cradle to defend his mother from calumny, healed the sick and raised the dead. He came to confirm the Torah(the law) and preach the Gospel (the news)

“And He (Allah) will teach him the-Book and the Wisdom and the-Torah and the Gospel. And (make him) a messenger to the Children-of Israel.” (3:48).

Allah will teach him to say and do things correctly: and He will teach him the Torah that He had revealed to Moses (peace be upon him) and the Gospel which He will reveal to him.
(Ali-Imran:48)

The message of Jesus was not-new or unique: salvation through-worshipping Allah alone, which is pure monotheism in belief and-deed, and perfection of morals and character through adherence to-the law, both inward faith and external deeds. As Jesus stated:

“(Jesus): Indeed, Allah is my Lord-and your Lord, so worship Him.That is the straight path.” (3:51).

Allah is my Lord and your Lord, and He is the only One that deserves to be followed and feared. So, worship Him alone. This worship of Allah and being mindful of Him that I instruct you to do is the straight path which has no crookedness.
(Ali-Imran:51)

Jesus is among the greatest of all-Prophets and is highly respected-in Islam. A Muslim’s faith is invalid without belief in Jesus.”’

By name, Moses is mentioned over 120 times in the Qur’an, Jesus-around twenty-five & Muhammad (peace and blessing upon him) four times, indicating the-status that Moses and Jesus have in Islam. Had Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) been-the author of the Qur’an his own name would have been mentioned more-frequently and made much more prominent. Allah stated:

“Say : ‘I am not something original-among the messengers, nor do I-know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is-revealed to me, and Tam not but a clear warner.” (46:9)

O Messenger! Say to these idolaters who reject your prophethood: “I am not the first Messenger Allah has sent, as many messengers came before me. I do not know what Allah will do with me nor what He will do with you in this life. I only follow what Allah reveais to me, so | do not say or do except according to what He reveals. And I am only a warner who clearly warns of His punishment”
(Al-Ahqaf:9)

Meaning, the message of Muhammad (Blessing and peace be upon him) is a continuation of the-message of the previous Prophets, who are-given honourable mention, and-Muhammad speaks not of his own accord but faithfully conveys-what is revealed to him

As for what is known as Judaism today, it is not what Moses originally-called to, Moses called to Islam (submission to Allah with pure monotheism, singling Him out with all forms of worship), as did all the Prophets and-Messengers. Judaism is named after the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve-tribes of Israel

The Jewish Encyclopedia-makes a distinction between the-original Mosaic teachings and Rabbinic Judaism, a later development which-has remained the main character of Judaism till today.

The Jewish Encylopedia mentions that the Israelite faith underwent freguent changes-throughout the ages. It was strongly affected and moulded by the beliefs-and practices of host nations such as Egypt, Persia and Babylonia.

The-Quran rehearsed to Jews in the era of Muhammad the great-favours Allah had bestowed upon the Children of Israel when they had been-upon right guidance and were the best of nations.

It reminded them how-their religious leaders had departed from the guidance of Moses, altered-their scripture and law, entered into the practice of sorcery, fell into polytheism, contended with their prophets and distorted the religion of-Islam they were ordered to follow

Muslims-are in fact the true followers of Jesus today, just as they are the true-followers of Moses.” Prophet Muhammad (blessing andpeace be upon him) said: “Both in this-world and the next, I am the nearest of all the-people to the Son of Mary, and-all the prophets are paternal brothers, and there has been no prophet-between me and him (Jesus).”
(Reported by Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih)

The Prophet also said: “Whoever testifies-that no deity is worthy of worship but Allah alone, without any partners, that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, that Jesus is the servant of-Allah, His Word which He bestowed upon-Mary, a Spirit from Him, and that-Paradise is true and Hellfire is true, then he will enter Paradise through any-of the eight gates of Paradise he wishes.”
(Reported by Imam Muslim in his Sahih)

Regarding the statement of Allah

“O People of the Scripture, do not-commit excess in your religion-and nor say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son-of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He-directed to Mary and a soul (created at a command) from Him. So-believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, “Three’. Desist,it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above-having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and-whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of-affairs.” (4:171).

“O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, “Three”; desist – it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs” (4:171)

This verse was revealed in relation to various factions of the Christians. They had sayings such as, “Jesus is Allah”, “He is the son of-Allah” and “He is the third of three.”

The commentators of the Qur’an-provide the following general-elaboration of the meaning of the above verse, as clarification and-admonition for Christians:

O people of the Gospel, do not-exceed the true belief and do not-exaggerate and say of Allah except the truth. Do not claim a son and-wife for Him, for Jesus the son of Mary was no more than a-messenger like many other messengers before him. He was sent with-the message of Islam which is to worship Allah alone, without-ascribing any partners to Him.

(The ability to recognize this truth is-part of an innate disposition and natural instinct—the fitrah—which-every person is born with).

Just like this truth also attested to by the-wonders and signs in creation. So Jesus is the Messenger of Allah. He-is the Word of Allah, with the meaning that he was created through a-Word spoken by Allah which is “Be!”—not that he, Jesus, in his-essence, is the actual Word of Allah. It was through this Word that-Gabriel (Jibril) was sent and he breathed from the Spirit (Roh) of-Allah into Mary (peace be upon her).

This Spirit(Roh) is not a part of Allah’s essence-but a created entity which-gave rise to life and its reality is-unknown, The same Spirit was breathed into Adam (peace be upon him) who was-born without father and mother.

Through this Spirit(Roh) came the-miraculous birth of Jesus. Hence, Jesus is the Word and the Spirit of-Allah. He was created through Allah’s Word of command and the-sending and breathing of the created Spirit(Roh) through Jibril.

So people-of the Gospel, believe in this truth-regarding Jesus, the Son of Mary-and submit to Allah alone. Shun the worship of all other deities-including Jesus and his mother Mary and do not say “There are three,”for Allah is only one deity who is worthy of worship in truth. You-have unjustly raised Jesus from the station of prophethood and-messengership to one of lordship (rububiyyah).

Yet Jesus and his-mother Mary were mere mortals, they ate, drank and walked the-Earth and owned and controlled nothing in the heavens and Earth, save that Allah bestowed miracles upon Jesus as a sign of his prophethood.

Desist from this statement of “Three,” believe in the-absolute oneness of Allah and worship only Him alone. This is the-straight path indicated by authentic, uncorrupted revelation and-sound reason.”
(Refer to the exegesis of Ibn Kathir, al-Tabart and al-Baghawi)

The next chapter looks in a bit-more detail at Jesus and Mary in-the Noble Qur’an,

Jesus and Mary in the Qur’an

The position of Jesus (peace be upon him) and-his mother Maryam (peace be upon her) is a-very lofty one in the Qur’an. It-contrasts with their portrayal in-Talmudic literature.

One is a Messenger and Prophet of Allah, and-the other, his mother, a siddigah (extremely truthful in intention, word and deed), a title given to those from mankind who attain the-best possible rank short of prophethood.

The 19th chapter of the Qur’an-is-named after Mary and verses 16-to 36 relate to the conception and birth of Jesus.

And Allah Says

And mention, O Messenger, in the book revealed to you the story of Mary (peace be upon her), when she moved away from her family and stayed separately in a place to their east.

Thus, she made for herself a veil from the people which would cover her, so that they cannot see her when she is worshipping her Lord. Then I sent Gabriel (peace be upon him) to her, thus he appeared to her in the form of a perfectly-formed human. So she thought he has a malicious intention towards her.

So when she saw him in the form of a perfectly-formed human heading towards her, she said: “I seek protection of the Merciful from you that any harm should come to me from you, if you are pious and fear Allah”.

Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: “I am not a human. I am only a Messenger from your Lord who He has sent to you for me to give you a good pure child”.

Mary said surprisingly: “How can I have a child when neither a husband nor anyone else has come near me nor am I an adulteress that I should have a child?”

Gabriel said to her: “The matter is as you said, namely that no husband or anyone else has touched you nor are you an adulteress. However, your Lord said: ‘To create a child without a father is easy for Me. And it is so that the child granted to you is a sign for people of the power of Allah, and a mercy from Me to them, due to the good they will achieve through him. And the creation of this child of yours is a fixed decree from Allah and written in the Preserved Tablet’.

So she conceived him after the angel blew into her, then she withdrew with him to a place far from the people.

And the pangs of childbirth struck her and made her take refuge by the trunk of a date tree. Mary said: “If only I had died before this day and I was something not even mentioned, so that bad is not thought of me”.

Then Gabriel(or baby jesus) called to her from the bottom of the valley: “Do not grieve. Your Lord has made for you a spring of water beneath you from which you can drink.

And hold the trunk of the tree and shake it; it will instantly drop fresh ripe dates on you.

So eat of the ripe dates, drink of the water, and be pleased with your child and do not grieve. And if you see any person who asks you regarding the child, say to him: ‘I have bound myself to silence for my Lord’s sake, so will not speak to any person today”.

Then Mary came carrying her child to her people. Her people said to her out of shock: “O Mary, you have committed a grave fabricated matter, by bringing a child without a father.

O one who resembles Aaron (a righteous man) in worship, your father was not an adulterer nor was your mother. You are from a pure household known to be righteous, so how can you bring a child without a father?”

She pointed towards her son Jesus (peace be upon him) who was in the cradle. So the people said in surprise: “How can we talk to a child who is in the cradle?”

Jesus (peace be upon him) said: “I am the servant of Allah. He gave the Gospel and made me one of His prophets.

And He made me a great benefit for the servants wherever I am. And He ordered me to perform prayer and give Zakat for as long as I live.

And He made me righteous to my mother. And He did not make me arrogant towards the obedience of my Lord nor did He make me disobedient to her.

And safety from the satans and his helpers is on me on the day of my birth, the day of my death and the day I shall be raised on the Day of Judgment. The satan has no evil effect on me in th three frightening places”.

He who is described with these qualities is Jesus, son of Mary. And this discussion is the word of truth regarding him, not that which is said by the misguided who doubt and disagree in his affair.

It does not befit Allah to have a son, exalted and free He is from this. When He intends something, it is enough for Him to say regarding this thing: Be, and it most definitely becomes. So He who is like this is free from having a son.

And Allah, may He be glorified, is both my Lord and your Lord, so make worship sincere for Him alone. This which I have mentioned to you is the straight path that leads to the pleasure of Allah.

But the factions of Jews and Christians differed regarding the matter of Jesus (peace be upon him). The Jews said about him that he is a magician. Some Christians said about him that he is the son of Allah. Woe to those who differ regarding him, from witnessing the great Day of Judgment, due to its scenes, reckoning and punishment.

How horrible is what they will hear and see on the Day of Judgment, and how severe it will be for them. And how strange will be their condition which you will see. However, the oppressors in this worldly life are clearly misguided from the straight path. They will not prepare for the afterlife until it will suddenly come to them whilst they are in their wrongdoing.
(Quran 19:16-38)

Any translation—no-matter how good and accurate—cannot do justice to the rhythmic-beauty, eloguence and power of the Arabic original.

Similarly, her-story and that of Jesus is mentioned in the 3rd chapter titled “The-Family of Imran” between verses 35 and 60.

Remember, O Messenger, when the wife of “Imran, the mother of Mary, said:

O Lord, I have made it a duty on myself to fully dedicate my unborn child to You, to worship You and Your House, so accept this act from me. You are the One who hears my prayer and knows my intention.

When she reached the end of her pregnancy and gave birth she was astonished — as she had hoped for a boy — and she said, ‘O Lord, I have given birth to a girl”. Allah knows what she gave birth to. Of course, a girl does not have the same strength and form as a boy that she had hoped for. She said, ‘I have named her Mary and ask for Your mercy in protecting her and her children from the rejected Satan’.

Allah graciously accepted the dedication and brought her up well. He made the hearts of His pious servants incline caringly to her and put her in the care of the Prophet Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah would enter her place of worship he would find wholesome food there. So, he asked her, ‘O Mary, where did you get this food from?’ She replied, “This food is from Allah. Allah gives to whomever He wishes in abundance without account.

When Zachariah saw the food that Allah was miraculously giving to Mary, he became hopetul that Allah would give him a child despite being very old and his wife being unable to bear children. He said: O Lord, give me a good child. You hear the prayer of the person who prays to You and You know his condition.

The angels called out to him while he was standing in prayer in his place of worship, saying: Allah gives you good news of a child to be born to you whose name will be John. He will confirm a word from Allah – which refers to Jesus, son of Mary, because he was specially created by a word from Allah. This-child will be a leader of his people with his knowledge and worship. He will be innocent, keeping himself away from desires, including approaching women. He will dedicate himself to worshipping His Lord and will also be a prophet from those who are righteous.

When the angels gave him the good news about John, Zachariah said, ‘O Lord, how can I have a child after I have become old and my wife is unable to bear children?’ Allah replied to him that the example of the creation of John, in spite of his old age and his wife being barren, is like that of the creation of anything that Allah wishes to create, even though it is out of the ordinary. This is because Allah has power over everything and does whatever Hewills in His wisdom and knowledge.

Zachariah said: O Lord, give me a sign that my wife is pregnant. Allah said: The sign that you want is that you will not be able to speak for three days, except by indications, and this will not be because of any disability. So, remember Allah much and glorify Him at the end and beginning of the day.

Remember, O Messenger, when the angels said to Mary (peace be upon her): Allah has chosen you because of the praiseworthy gualities you have. He has purified you from all defects, and chosen you over all the other women of your time.

O Mary, stand for long periods in prayer, prostrate to your Lord and bow down with His righteous servants who bow down to Him.

The story of Zachariah and Mary is one of the reports of (the Ghaib) which I reveal to you, O Messenger. You were not there with those scholars and worshippers when they argued about who was most entitled to raise Mary. They eventually decided to draw lots by throwing their pens, and the pen of Zachariah (peace be upon him) won.

Remember, O Messenger, when the angels said: O Mary, Allah gives you good news of a child who will be created without a father: merely by a word from Allah, such as ‘Be’, and he will become-a child by Allah’s will. The name of this child will be the Messiah, Jesus, son-of Mary. Hewill have a high rank in this worid and the Afterlife and he will be one of those who are made close to Allah.

This child will miraculously speak-to people when he is a small baby, as well as when he grows up and becomes a man. Hewill tell them what is best-for them in their religious and worldly affairs. He will also be one of those who are righteous in their words and actions.

Mary was surprised that she was to have a child without a husband and said in astonishment: How can I have a child when no man has come near me in a lawful or unlawful way? The angel said to her: Just as Allah will create a child for you without a father, He creates whatever He wishes even though it-may be out of the ordinary. When Allah wishes for something, He says ‘Be’ and it is. Nothing can stop Him doing as He wilis.

Allah will teach him to say and do things correctly: and He will teach him the Torah that He had revealed to Moses (peace be upon him) and the Gospel which He will reveal to him.

Allah will make him a messenger to the Israelites, instructing him to say to them: I am Allah’s messenger to you. I have brought to you a sign indicating my prophethood: I will make the shape of a bird using clay, then I will breathe into it and it will become a living bird by Allah’s permission. I will cure the one who was born blind, so that he will be able to see, and the leper who will recover from his illness, and I will bring the dead to life. I will do all of this with Allah’s permission. I will tell you about what you consume and what you hide in your homes. In-all of these extraordinary things that I mentioned to you, which human beings cannot do, is a clear sign that I am Allah’s messenger to you, if you wish to have faith and to accept the proof.

I have come to you to confirm the revelation of the Torah that was before me, and to make lawful some of that which was unlawful in the past: making things easy for you. I have brought to you a clear proof of the truthfulness-of what I say, so be mindful of Allah by fulfilling His instructions and avoiding His prohibitions, and follow that which I call you to.

Allah is my Lord and your Lord, and He is the only One that deserves to be followed and feared. So, worship Him alone. This worship of Allah and being mindful of Him that I instruct you to do is the straight path which has no crookedness.

When Jesus realized that they were going to continue in their disbelief, he addressed the Israelites, saying, “Who will help me in calling towards Allah?’ His chosen followers said: We are the ones whowill help Allah’s religion. We have faith in Allah and we follow you. Be a witness, O Jesus, that we submit to Allah by accepting His Oneness and following Him.

The disciples also said: Our Lord, we have believed in the Gospel that-you revealed and we have followed the messenger, Jesus (peace be upon him), so make us of those who are witnesses to the truth and who have faith in You and Your messengers.

The disbelievers from the Israelites plotted to kill Jesus (peace be upon him), so Allah planned to leave them in their misguidance: and He made another person resemble Jesus (peace be upon him) on the occasion when they actually tried to murder him. Allah is the best plotter, because there can be nothing more severe than His plot against His enemies.

Allah also planned against them-by saying to Jesus: O Jesus, I will take you away alive, raise your body and soul to Me, rid you of the filth of those who disbelieved you and distance you from them. I will make those who follow you part of the true religion, which includes acceptance of Muhammad (peace be upon him): and they will have greater proof and might over those who disbelieve you until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me alone will be your return on the Day of Resurrection and I will pass true judgement between you regarding your differences.

As for those who disbelieved you and the truth you brought to them, I will punish them severely in the world by making them suffer being killed, imprisoned and disgraced, and in the Afterlife, I will punish them in the fire of Hell. They will have no one to help them against the punishment

As for those who had faith in you and the truth that you brought to them, and did good actions (such as prayer, charity, fasting, keeping family relations, etc.), then Allah will give them the reward of their actions in full without any reduction. This refers to the followers-of the Messiah before the coming of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), whose coming was confirmed by the Messiah himself. Allah does not love those who do wrong and the greatest wrong is to ascribe partners to Allah and to disbelieve His messengers.

This account of Jesus which is recited to you is a clear sign indicating the truth of what was revealed to you. It is a perfect message for those who are mindful of Allah, as it contains nothing false.

With Allah, the example of the creation of Jesus (peace be upon him) is like the creation of Adam, who was born from dust without a father or mother. Allah simply said to him: Become a man. And he became as Allah willed. How do you then assume that Jesus is a god on the basis that he has no father when you accept that Adam is human despite his having no father or mother?

The undoubtable truth about Jesus-is that which was revealed to you by-your Lord, so do not be one of those who doubt and are unsure. Instead, be firm on the truth that you have.
(Ali-Imran:30-60)

Mention is also made of-Jesus and his helpers at the end of the 5th chapter titled “The Table-Spread”, between verses 110 and 120.

Remember when Allah addressed Jesus (peace be upon him) and told him to remember Allah’s favour to him when He created him without a father, to his mother, Mary (peace be upon her), when He chose her over all the women of her time: and upon him when He strengthened him with Gabriel (peace be upon him.). Allah told him that he used to speak to people as a baby, calling them to Allah: and that he used to speak to them in his adulthood, telling them what Allah had sent him with. Allah reminded him of the favour of being taught how to write, and that He taught him the Torah that He had revealed to Moses (peace be upon him) and the Gospel that He revealed to him. He was reminded of the favour of being taught the secrets of the sacred law and its benefits and wisdom. Allah reminded him of how he would make the shape of a bird from clay, blow into it and it used to become a living bird. He used to cure the person who was born blind, and he would treat the leper and heal his skin. He also used to bring the dead to life by praying to Allah to give them life. All of this happened with Allah’s permission. Another favour that Allah reminded him about was that Allah protected him from the Israelites when they intended to kill him after he brought to them clear miracles. The only thing they could do was to deny them, and they said, “Jesus has brought nothing but plain sorcery’.

Another favour that Allah reminded him about was that Allah created assistants for him when He inspired the disciples to have faith in Him and in Jesus. They submitted to that and responded saying, ‘I believe. Be a witness, O our Lord, that we submit to You in devotion’.

Remember when the disciples said, ‘Can you call on your Lord to send down a table from the sky? Jesus (peace be upon him) responded to them by telling them to be mindful of Allah and not to ask for such a thing, as it may prove to bea trial for them. He said to them, ‘Place your trust in your Lord in seeking provision, if you are truly believers’.

The disciples said to Jesus, We want to eat from this table, so that our hearts are satisfied about Allah’s perfect power and that you are His Messenger: to know for certain that you have told us the truth about what you have brought from Allah and to be witnesses to it for those people who are not present’.

Jesus gave in to their reguest and prayed to Allah saying, ‘Our Lord, send down to us atable of food, so that we can hold a festival on the day it comes down in order to honour You out of gratitude. It will also be a sign and proof of Your Oneness and of the truth of what I have been sent with. Give us such provision that will help us worship You. You, O our Lord, are the best provider’.

Allah answered the prayer of Jesus (peace be upon him) and said that He would send down the table that they had reguested. He also told him that if anyone disbelieves after the table is sent down then they should blame only themselves, and that Allah will punish them with a severe punishment, unlike any other: due to them seeing an overwhelming proof and any denial being the result of stubbornness. Allah fulfilled His promise and sent down the table to them.

Remember that Allah will address Jesus son of Mary (peace be with him) on the Day of Rising and ask him whether he told people to worship him and his mother besides Allah. Jesus will reply, declaring Allah’s purity, ‘It was not right for me to tell them anything but the truth. If I had said that You would know it, because nothing is hidden from You. You know what I keep hidden within myself, but I do not know what is with You. You are the only one who knows everything that is hidden and everything that is apparent’

Jesus will say to His Lord, ‘I only told people what you instructed me to tell them: to worship You alone. For as long as I remained amongst them I watched over what they were saying. When my term ended and I was raised to the sky alive, You, O Lord, were watching their actions. You are a witness to everything and nothing is hidden from You; so You know what I said to them and what they said after me’

If you punish them, O Lord, they are your servants and You can do with them as you wish. If You graciously forgive those of them who had faith, nothing can stop you from doing so because You are the Mighty, Who cannot be overpowered, and the Wise in Your handling of matters

Allah will say to Jesus (peace be with him) that the Day of Rising is a day on which the truthfulness of those who were true in their intentions, statements and actions will be of benefit to them. They will receive gardens with palaces and trees overlooking flowing streams, in which they will live eternally, with death never coming to them. Allah will be pleased with them and will never become angry with them. They will pleased with Allah because of the everlasting delight they have received. Such reward and pleasure is the supreme success, which cannot be equalled by any other

Allah alone controls the heavens and the earth, and everything within them. He is their Creator and the One Who handles their affairs. He has power over everything and nothing can overpower Him.
[al-Maa’idah 5:116-120].

(Most of the commentary in this section has been summarised from-Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman (Beirut: Mu’assasah al-Risalah, 2002) of Shaykh“Abd al-Rahman bin Nasir al-Sa’di (d. 1956))

The Honourable Mention of Mary in the Qur’an.

Allah said:
“And mention, (O Muhammad), in the Book the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east.”
(19:16).

And mention, O Messenger, in the book revealed to you the story of Mary (peace be upon her), when she moved away from her family and stayed separately in a place to their east.
(Maryam:16)

Allah has honoured Mary the-mother of Jesus, tremendously in-that she has been mentioned in the Qur’an.

The Muslims have been-ordered to remember her and her story.

This Qur’an is read across-the east and west by hundreds of millions of people, and within it,they recite and remember the virtues of Mary, her chastity, her-piety, her devotion, her being chosen over all other women of the-world and receiving tremendous praise and respect

The mention of Mary and her son-Jesus brings tears to their eyes,as they recite or listen to the various heart-wrenching, tear-jerking-accounts in the Qur’an and they experience these feelings upon-sound knowledge, historical truth and justice.

Mary’s Seclusion and Devotion to Allah

Allah said:

“And she took, in seclusion from-them, a screen. Then We sent to-her our spirit (Gabriel), and he appeared before her in the form of a-man in all respects.” (19:17).

(Maryam:17)

Mary went in seclusion from her-family, to a place in the east and-took a screen for herself. The reason for this was so that she could-focus on worshipping her Lord in a state of sincerity, humility and-submission.

Due to her intense desire to protect her chastity,Allah-favoured her by bestowing her a son without any male intervention. Thus, Allah sent Gabriel who appeared to her in the form of a man-possessing excellent stature, utmost beauty, and absence of any-flaws in appearance to give her glad tidings

Mary’s Modesty and Chastity

Allah said:

“She said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you,(so leave me), if you do fear Allah.’ He said, i am only the messenger-of your Lord to give you (news of) a pure, righteous son.” She said,“How can I have a son when no man has touched me and nor am I unchaste?’ He said, “Thus (it shall-be). Your Lord says, “It is easy for-Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us.And it is a matter (already) decreed”.” (19:18-21).

And the creation of this child of yours is a fixed decree from Allah and written in the Preserved Tablet’
(Maryam:18-21)

When Mary saw him—and she was in isolation, away from herfamily, and had taken a screen for privacy—she feared that this man-may intend evil. So she sought refuge in Allah, the Most-Merciful-and admonished the man, thereby combining between two matters: holding fast to her Lord by seeking-protection and admonishing the-man to have fear of Allah.

This is evidence of her utmost modesty-and chastity—in that she protected her chastity despite the-circumstances which invited to contrary behaviour—and it is also a-refutation of the calumny of the calumniators who later attacked her-honour. Due to her chastity, Allah, granted her a son who would be a-sign from amongst His signs

When Gabriel saw her fear and-concern, he informed her that he-is merely a messenger from his-Lord to inform her and convey the-message to her that Allah is going to bestow her a pure (blameless, faultless), righteous child, possessing praiseworthy qualities.

This-surprised her and she asked as to how she could give birth to a son-without being touched by a man. She was informed by Gabriel that-Allah had decreed such a matter because it is easy for Him.

This-indicates that all natural laws and cause-effect mechanisms do not-function-independently and are subject to Allah’s creative power, His-decree and determination. Allah is able to alter them or bypass them-and in this case, out of His favour and bounty, He granted Mary a-son without the intervention of any man

This was also a display of mercy(rahmah) in that Allah made this-son to be a prophet and messenger, one who would recite His verses, instruct them in the Book and Wisdom, thereby purifying them and-leading them to happiness and felicity in both this life and the next

Allah makes mention of Mary’s chastity in another place

“And (remember) she (the virgin Mary) who guarded her-chastity, We breathed into her (through our Spirit, Gabriell, and We-made her and her son (jesus) a sign for the worlds (of men and Jinn).” (21:01).

O Messenger! Also mention the Story of Mary peace be upon her, who protected herself from fornication. Allah then sent Gabriel (peace be upon him) to her, and he blew into her. Conseguently, she became pregnant with Jesus (peace be upon him): they were both signs for the people of the Power of Allah, and proofs that nothing is beyond Allah’s capability such that He created Jesus without a father
(Al-Anbiya:91)

The meaning of this verse is-explained by scholars of Qur’anic-exegesis (tafsir) as follows:

(Summarised from the explanations and commentaries of al-Tabari,Ibn Kathir, al-Baghawi, al-Sa’di and al-Muyassar.)

Remember Mary who is being praised, whose lofty status is being-explained, and whose nobility is being announced, the one who-preserved her innocence and virginity by maintaining utmost-chastity by safeguarding herself from what is unlawful and shunning-everything that brings one closer to what is unlawful (in terms of-sexual relations).

She even guarded herself from what was lawful, thereby not marrying due to being preoccupied and engrossed in-worship, remembrance, chastity & serving her Lord.

As a reward-for her utmost piety and chastity, Allah rewarded her by-bestowing upon her a son without the intervention of any male

Hence, she was able to maintain her-chastity which she had piously-and diligently guarded.

Gabriel was sent to give her glad tidings and-he came with the Spirit (roh) (a created entity whose reality is unknown)which was breathed into-her, leading her to conceive, by the-permission of Allah

Both Mary and Jesus were made a sign for the-worlds (of jinn and men). Mary gave birth without male intervention-and Jesus spoke as an infant

Miracles were made to occur through-him such that generations after generations would make mention of-Jesus (and his mother), and such that they come to know that Allah-is powerful over all things, and that-from His far-reaching wisdom is-that He creates whatever and however He wills

The Birth of Jesus.

Allah said:

“So she conceived him, and she-withdrew with him to a far place. And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm.She said, “Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten, But he (an angel or baby jesus) called her from below her, ‘Do not-grieve. Your Lord has provided beneath you a water stream. And-shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree, it will drop upon you-ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see-any human being, say, “Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to (any) human being.”
(19:22-26).

(Maryam:22-16)

When she was made to conceive-(through Gabriel blowing into-her of the created spirit he was sent with), she feared scorn and-rebuke from her people, and withdrew to a far place. She suffered-numerous types of pain, both physical and emotional: the pains of-childbirth and the pains of what the people would say, accusing her-of immoral conduct of which she was completely innocent.

Unable-to bear these pains she wished she had died before this event in her-life and had been a thing forgotten. However, an angel comforted-her and instructed her not to grieve-and to take from the stream and-the dates which would provide relief to her.

And as for her other-pain, the pain of what people would say to her, the angel instructed-her to not to speak to anyone, vowing silence. By not speaking to-them, she would be saved from the grief created by their speech, since they would not believe her in any case. Rather, she would be-exonerated by her own son, which is the greatest testimony of her-innocence. Since bringing a son in this manner was out of the-ordinary, then evidence of her innocence and her utmost chastity-would also have to be out of the ordinary

Mary Brings Jesus to Her People

Allah said:

“Then she brought him to her-people, carrying him. They said, O-Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented. O sister of-Aaron,” your father was not a man who used to commit adultery, nor was your mother an unchaste woman’.” (19:27-28).

(Maryam:27-28)

Aaron was the name given to righteous people amongst the Children-of Israel, because there used to be a man amongst them called Aaron who-was very righteous. So when Mary brought the baby, they said to her “O-sister of Aaron”, meaning “O one associated with righteousness” because she-came from a righteous family. The Muslim-scholar of Qur’anic explanation

When her postnatal period had-ended, Mary returned to her-people, carrying Jesus, with her knowledge that she is totally pure-and innocent. Hence, she came without care and concern. They told-her that she had brought-an enormity, something without-precedent, and what they really meant was that she was guilty of-immorality. They protested to her that her parents were upright-people, free and innocent of this immoral act of which she stood-accused, indicating the understanding that children generally-acguire the ways and behaviours of their parents. So Mary had to-exonerate herself from the grievous charge of which she stood-accused by her people
