🔆 INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAYHI RAJI’UN MEANING🔆
⏩ Question
can we use inna lilah wa inna ilai rajihoon for other scenario aside from using it for a dead person?
⏩ Answer:
Praise be to Allah Azza wa Jalla
🔆The translation of this phrase inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un is “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Allah we shall return.”
🔆 Hadith on du’a when calamity strikes
✍️Umar bin Abu Salamah narrated from his mother, Umm Salamah, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“When a calamity strikes one of you, then let him say: ‘Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my affliction, so reward me for it, and replace it for me with something better (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun Allahumma Indaka Ahtasibu Musibati Fa’jurni Fiha Wa Abdilni Minha Khair).’”
When the time of death was near Abu Salamah, he said:
‘O Allah, replace me for my wife, with better than me.”
So when he died, Umm Salamah said:
“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. I seek reward with Allah for my affliction, so reward me for it.”
📚Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)Jami At-Tirmidhi 3511
In-book reference: Book 48, Hadith 142🔆 The full ayat in Surah Baqarah 155-157
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, _“Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un”_. Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.”
🔆Understand saying this is not just a making of a statement. The prayer, if said with pure intention, is accompanied by a deep conviction of one’s heart — “To Allah we belong”. If he or she believes this to be true, then it would be wise to dedicate their life on this earth to fulfill all activities with the thought of allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, the one to whom all things belong. We are all destined to return to him, this is our inevitable fate. This world is short and temporary. The akhirah is where we will spend eternity.
🔆 inalillahi wainailaihi rajiun should not be confined just upon hearing news of someone’s passing away, it should be a dua to remind ourselves during difficult times to strive in the name of Allah.
🔆There are a good number of references available in the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reciting inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun in stressful or painful situations.
🔆 This shows that Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un is not limited to being recited at the death of a beloved one. But can be recited on any loss or every situation that puts you in trouble, stress, and pain.
🔆The benefits of reciting inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun are great if it is used and recited correctly. We have highlighted the wonderful meaning, virtues, and uses of Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un for you to get the most out of it.
✍️Umm Salama, the wife of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
If any servant (of Allah) who suffers a calamity says:
” We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return; O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it,”
Allah will give him reward for affliction, and would give him something better than it in exchange. She (Umm Salama) said: When Abu Salama died. I uttered (these very words) as I was commanded (to do) by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). So Allah gave me better in exchange than him. i. e. (I was taken as the wife of) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
📚Sahih Muslim 918
🔆 inna lillahi wa in allah-e-rajioon are not habitual or ritual words. Thus, don’t let these words be a statement. A person must be mindful and reflect when reciting this profound dua.don’t think that this du’a only use when hear news of death person
🔆 Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi raji un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is a complete supplication that reminds us that we return to God on the Day of Resurrection and everything around us belongs to Him. Everything on earth will taste death. This supplication urges us to the virtues that every believer will be rewarded for
🔆 When To Say Inna Lillahi Wa Inallahi Raji’un
1- Inna lillahi wa inallahi raji’un is not just said at the death of a person.
✍️Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) is merciful. He has mentioned in the Quran that He tests his people through hunger, fear, loss of wealth and loss of loved ones. He then praises and tells that there are glorious rewards for the patient people. Here comes the question, who are “the patient people” Allah is praising?
Allah has also cleared this question through the verse:
Who, when afflicted with calamity, says: “Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.”
📚(Al Baqarah, 156)
▶️The patient people are those who console themselves to face calamities through the guide of the above verse. It means that they are the ones who recite this verse on calamity and understand that Allah is the lord and every calamity and happiness comes from Him. He is free in His acts and doesn’t burden His people. We are His servants and in the end, we will return to him. This is the perfect example of patience and use of inna lillahi wa in allah-e-rajioon.
2- Saying inna lillahi wa inallah e raji oon as Condolence at the death of a Muslim
▶️ It is mustahabb (desirable) to condole with the family of the dead in words like these; _“May Allah forgives and has mercy on the dead! May He overlook his lapses! May he cause you all to endure the severe tragedy patiently and may He reward you all against this grief and affliction.”_
3- Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un is also said whenever we suffer hardship and calamity.
▶️ The verse can be recited in every disaster, misery, stress or any situation that asks you for patience and tests your belief in Allah.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has recited this verse several times and in several situations. And Allah know best
