TRUTHFULNESS LEADS TO RIGHTEOUSNESS

And Lying Leads to Wickedness

Allāh ﷻ saysيَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَقُولُوا۟ قَوْلًۭا سَدِيدًۭا
Oh you who believe, Fear Allāh and speak words of truth and justice.
And from the fruits from speaking words of truth and justice?
يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ
He will amend for you, your deeds and forgive for you, your sins.
[33:70-71]Ibn Kathir رحمه الله writes:
Meaning, to speak in a straightforward manner, with no crookedness or distortion. He promises them that if they do that, He will reward them by making their deeds righteous, i.e., enabling them to do righteous deeds, and He will forgive them their past sins. With regard to whatever sins they may commit in the future, He will inspire them to repent from them.سبحان الله
Narrated `Abdullah رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (ie wickedness, evil-doing), and Al-Fajur (wickedness) leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar.”
[Sahih Bukhari 6094]We must always speak the truth and avoid lying, whether it is to someone else or to ourselves. Even if the truth is against us.
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله writes:
“For this reason, we say truthfulness is by the tongue and by the limbs. Whenever a statement exactly matches reality then it is truthfulness by the tongue, and whenever the actions of the limbs match exactly what is in the heart then it is truthfulness by the limbs.”The fruits of this honesty with ourselves and with everyone around us is that our deeds will be purified, our sins will be forgiven and we are closer to righteousness because of it!
A person who honestly intends to repent, will acknowledge his weaknesses before Allāh ﷻ even if it makes him feel most ashamed of himself, and this will lead to him correcting himself more wholly, but a person who isn’t truthful with himself doesn’t do this, rather he only corrects according to his whims, forgetting that Allāh ﷻ sees him!
May Allāh ﷻ make us among those who are truthful and protect us from falling into the sin of lying.
آمِيْن
