Taraaweeh prayers, qiyamulal and witr
……..Praise be to Allah.
🔍 Why Should I Pray Taraweeh?
Reason One | For Reward
▫️“Whoever prays qiyaam – with the imam until he finishes, it will be recorded as if he spent the whole night in prayer.”
[Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi 806]Reason Two | For Forgiveness
▫️“Whoever spends the nights of Ramadaan in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”
[ al-Bukhaari (2008) and Muslim (174)]🔍This virtue is for the one who prays Taraweeh with the imam and finishes with him
▫️It was narrated from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said concerning Taraweeh prayer: Whoever prays qiyaam with the imam until he finishes, it will be recorded for him as if he spent an entire night in prayer.” Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (806); he said: This is a saheeh hasan hadith. Also narrated by Abu Dawood (1375). Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel (2/193).
🔍Is tarawih compulsory?
If a Muslim does not pray Tarawih , there is no sin on him for that, whether he has an excuse or not, because it is not obligatory. Rather it is a confirmed Sunnah which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did regularly and encouraged the Muslims to do as he said: “Whoever prays qiyam in Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 37; Muslim, 760)But the Muslim should not neglect Tarawih prayer . If he cannot pray it with the imam in the mosque, then he should pray it at home. If he cannot pray eleven rak’ahs then he should pray as much as he can, even if it is only two rak’ahs, then he should pray Witr.
▫️Narrated by Imam Ahmad (23339), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah has added a prayer for you, and it is Witr, so pray it between ‘Isha and Fajr.” (Classed as sahih by al-Albani in Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah 9108).
The end of Taraweeh prayer and its completion at which the imam finishes has been defined by Islamic teaching as being Witr prayer, as is narrated in saheeh reports from the instructions and actions of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).
▫️It was narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Make the last of your prayers at night Witr.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (998) and Muslim (751).
Whether the prayer is directly after ‘Isha’ or at the end of the night, in order to attain the virtue of praying during the last third of the night, all of that is prescribed.
▫️It was narrated that Jaabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever fears that he will not get up at the end of the night, let him pray Witr at the beginning. Whoever is sure that he will get up at the end of the night, let him pray Witr at the end, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed, and that is better.” Narrated by Muslim (755).
Based on that, whoever prays twenty rak‘ahs with the first congregation after ‘Isha’ prayer, and prays Witr with the imam of that congregation, has completed Taraweeh prayer by praying Witr with the imam, and has fulfilled the condition of attaining the reward of spending the entire night in prayer by finishing with the imam, and he does not have to pray with another imam at the end of the night, because the first prayer is complete.
Whoever wants to pray both prayers, seeking more reward, is doing something good, but he should not pray Witr twice, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade doing that.
▫️It was narrated from Qays ibn Talq ibn ‘Ali, from his father, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “There should not be two Witrs in one night.” Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (470); classed as hasan by al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baari (2/481). Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhi (470).
Some of the scholars among the companions of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and others said: If he prays Witr at the beginning of the night, then sleeps, then gets up at the end of the night, he may offer whatever prayers he likes, but he should leave his Witr as it was. This is the view of Sufyaan ath-Thawri, Maalik ibn Anas, Ibn al-Mubaarak, ash-Shaafa‘i, the scholars of Kufah, and Ahmad.
This is more correct, because it was narrated via more than one isnaad that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) prayed after Witr.
End quote from Sunan at-Tirmidhi (2/334)
▫️If a person prays Taraweeh and prays Witr with the imam, then gets up in the night and prays tahajjud, there is nothing wrong with that, but he should not repeat Witr; rather the Witr that he prayed with the imam is sufficient. He may pray tahajjud with the imam as much as Allah enables him to. And if he delays Witr until the end of his prayers at night, there is nothing wrong with that, but he will miss out on following the imam, and it is best to follow the imam and pray Witr with him, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever prays qiyaam with the imam until he finishes, there will be written for him the reward of spending the entire night in qiyaam.” Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (806), Abu Dawood (1375), an-Nasaa’i (1605) and Ibn Maajah (1327). So he should follow the imam and pray Witr with him, and that should not prevent him from getting up at the end of the night and praying tahajjud. End quote.

🔍How many Rak‘ahs taraweeh Muhammad PBUH was performing during the month of Ramadan?
▫️Sahih al-Bukhari 1147
Narrated Abu Salma bin `Abdur Rahman:I asked
Aisha, "How is the prayer of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) during the month of Ramadan." She said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) never exceeded eleven rak
at in Ramadan or in other months; he used to offer four rakat-- do not ask me about their beauty and length, then four rak
at, do not ask me about their beauty and length, and then three rakat." Aisha further said, "I said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Do you sleep before offering the witr prayer?' He replied, 'O
Aisha! My eyes sleep but my heart remains awake’!”▫️Al-Suyuti said:
“What is narrated in the sahih and hasan ahadith is the command to observe night prayers during Ramadan, which is encouraged without specifying a particular number. It is not proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed twenty rak’ahs of Tarawih, rather that he prayed at night, with an unspecified number of rak’ahs. Then he delayed it on the fourth night lest it become obligatory for them and they might not be able to do it. Ibn Hajar al-Haythami said: There is no sahih report that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed twenty rak’ahs of Tarawih. The narration which suggests that he “used to pray twenty rak’ahs” is extremely weak (da’if).” (Al-Mawsu’ah al-Fiqhiyyah, 27/142-145
▫️With regard to the evidence quoted by those who say that it is not permissible to do more than eight rak’ahs in Tarawih, they quote the hadeeth of Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, who asked ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), “How did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pray during Ramadan?” She said: “He did not pray more than eleven rak’ahs in Ramadan or at other times. He would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray three. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, will you sleep before you pray Witr?’ He said, ‘O ‘Aishah, my eyes sleep but my heart does not.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1909; Muslim, 738) With regard to the evidence quoted by those who say that it is not permissible to do more than eight rak’ahs in Tarawih, they quote the hadeeth of Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, who asked ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), “How did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pray during Ramadan?” She said: “He did not pray more than eleven rak’ahs in Ramadan or at other times. He would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray three. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, will you sleep before you pray Witr?’ He said, ‘O ‘Aishah, my eyes sleep but my heart does not.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1909; Muslim, 738)
They said: This hadith indicates that the Messenger of Allah was consistent in his prayers at night in Ramadan and at other times.
▫️The number of rakats of the Taraweeh Prayer is based on the practice of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar led the Taraweeh Prayer in Masjid an-Nabawi for twenty rakats in the final times of his caliphate. After the period of Four Caliphs, no one objected to observing the Taraweeh prayer for twenty rakats. Scholars depend acted upon this hadith of the Prophet (pbuh) regarding this issue: “ After me, follow my sunnah and the sunnah of the caliphs in the right path” (Tirmidhi, Ilm, 16; Ibn Hanbal, IV, 126).
Allah knows best…
