DEPRESSION; AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE
➖➖➖
EPISODE 1️⃣: INTRODUCTION
➖➖➖Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest and anger that interfere with a person’s everyday activities.
Depression is the second most common mental disorder. More than 264 million people suffer from depression worldwide (World Health Organization, 2020), and the world experiences at least 25% rise every year (WHO, 2022).

Symptoms of Depression
➖➖➖
Depression is not just plain sadness as many people generally understand it to be. The negative feelings a person experiences become depression if they last for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) lists the following symptoms of depression:
1️⃣ Sadness, irritability and emptiness
2️⃣ Loss of pleasure in previously enjoyed activities
3️⃣ Too little or too much sleep most days
4️⃣ Unintended weight loss or gain or changes in appetite
5️⃣ Physical agitation or feelings of sluggishness
6️⃣ Low energy or fatigue
7️⃣ Feeling worthless, guilty or socially alienated
8️⃣ Trouble concentrating or making decisions
9️⃣ Constant pessimism and helplessness
🔟Inability to show or express feelings towards others or to accept feelings from others
1️⃣1️⃣ Chronic physical pain from which no remedy brings relief
1️⃣2️⃣ Weepiness
1️⃣3️⃣ Intrusive thoughts of death or suicide
📌 Depression sometimes causes/occurs with anxiety, symptoms of which include getting tense quickly; hyperactivity and not being able to calm down and relax.
The symptoms vary between individuals and may change over time. If five or more of the symptoms mentioned above are present, then the person most likely has depression.
Depression can lead to more stress and dysfunction and worsen the affected person’s life situation and the depression itself. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide.

Causes of Depression from an Islamic Perspective
➖➖➖It’s important to realize that feeling sad at times is an inevitable part of life; this is how Allaah has decreed it for everyone, even his most beloved creation. Life is never plain sailing for anyone, all stratification regardless. You may have reason to rejoice one day, then reason to feel sad for many other days; this is how it always is in the life of this world.
Sometimes, depression is an effect of adverse life events. These adverse life events are actually tests from Allaah, and it is upon us to be patient when tested. Sometimes, depression is more about feeling out of place in this world. Sometimes, it is caused by discontentment with the position Allaah places a person. Other times, it’s as recompense for sins a person committed.
Allaah (ﷻ) says:
وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا
But whosoever turns away from My Reminder, verily, for him is a life of hardship,…
(Surah Taha, 20:124)This means whoever opposes Allaah’s command will have a hard life in this world. He will have no tranquillity and no ease.
The Messenger of Allaah, (ﷺ), said, “If the sins of a servant are numerous and he does not have good deeds to compensate, Allaah will afflict him with sadness as an expiation for him.”
(Musnad Ahmad 24708)
The Messenger of Allaah, (ﷺ), said, “Afflictions, diseases, and sadness in the world are a recompense for sins.”
[Hilyat al-Awliya’ 8/119. Classed as Sahih (authentic) by Al-Albani]
The Prophet (ﷺ) also said:
“The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allaah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever accepts that wins His pleasure but whoever is discontent with that earns His wrath.”
(Al-Tirmidhi, 2396)To be continued… إن شاء الله
