❓ Can Istikharah be Done Any Time?❓
⏩ Question
Can istikhaarah prayer join with tahajjud?
⏩ Answer
Praise be to Allah Azza Wa Jalla
1️⃣ Firstly
‼️ There are some times at which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) disallowed (Forbidd) prayer. These are:
1 – From after Fajr prayer until the sun has appeared and risen to the height of a spear, i.e., approximately fifteen minutes.
📚 (al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 4/162).
2 – The time when the sun is at its zenith in the middle of the sky. This is a short time before the time for Zuhr prayer begins, approximately one-quarter of an hour or twenty minutes.
📚(Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 11/286).
▶️Some of the scholars said that it was shorter than that. Ibn Qaasim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said that it is a brief time period, not even long enough to pray, only enough to say the takbeer to start the prayer.
📚 (Haashiyat Ibn Qaasim ‘ala’l-Rawd al-Murabba’, 2/245)
3 – After ‘Asr prayer until the sun sets.
⁉️These three times were mentioned in many ahaadeeth in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade praying at these times. These ahaadeeth include the following:
1 – Al-Bukhaari (586) and Muslim (728) narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
‘There is no prayer after ‘Asr prayer until the sun has set, and no prayer after Fajr prayer until the sun has risen.’
2 – Muslim (832) narrated that ‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah al-Sulami (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
“I said, ‘O Prophet of Allaah, tell me what Allaah has taught you and I do not know, tell me about the prayer.’
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Pray Subh (Fajr) prayer, then do not pray until the sun has appeared and risen… then pray for your prayer is witnessed and attended (by the angels), until the shadow of a spear points due north – which is the time when the sun is in the middle of the sky – then stop praying, for at that time Hell is stoked up. When the shadow turns – which is the beginning of the time for Zuhr – then pray, for your prayer is witnessed and attended (by the angels), until you pray ‘Asr. Then stop praying until the sun sets…”
▶️ What is meant by this forbidding is general nafl prayers for which there is no reason.
2️⃣ Secondly
▶️The scholars differed concerning istikharah prayer and whether it is regarded as a prayer for which there is a reason, or not.
▶️The correct view is that if istikharah is done for something that is immediate and cannot be delayed, then this prayer may be performed at a time when prayer is not allowed , such as if a person wants to travel after ‘Asr prayer. But if the matter is not immediate and the prayer can be delayed until after the time when prayer is not allowed is over, then it should not be performed at that time.
✍️Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said in al-Fatawa al-Kubra (5/345):
“Regular Sunnah prayers may be made up, and prayers for which there is a reason may be done during the times when prayer is not allowed. This is one of the two views narrated from Ahmad, and is the view favoured by a number of our companions and others. Istikharah prayer may be performed at the time when prayer is not allowed with regard to something that is immediate and cannot be delayed until the time when prayer is permitted.
It is mustahabb to offer two rak’ahs immediately after doing wudu, even if that is at a time when prayer is not allowed. This is the view of al-Shafi’i.”
✍️Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked:
Can a person pray istikharah at a time when prayer is not allowed?
He replied:
“If istikharah has to do with an immediate matter that cannot be delayed until the time when prayer is not allowed is over, then it may be done. If it is for something that may be delayed, then it must be delayed.”
📚 (Majmu’ Fatawa Ibn ‘Uthaymin, 14/275)
3️⃣ Thirdly
▶️with regard joining istikhaarah prayer and tahajjud prayer.Tahajud and istikharah prayers are both included in the tathawwu prayer or sunnah prayer. The Tahajjud prayer is performed at night after the Isha prayer until before dawn, while the istikharah prayer can be performed at any time apart from the time when it is forbidden to pray except an emergency issues
▶️ Tahajjud and istikharah prayers are independent prayers. If you want to perform the istikharah prayer at night along with the Tahajjud prayer, then the istikharah prayer can be performed before or after the tahajjud prayer. This is based on the common pronunciation of ثُمَّ يُصَلِّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ which is contained in the following hadith narrated by Muslim:
“Muhammad Ibnu al-Mutsanna has told us, Ibnu Abi ‘Ady has told us, Hisham has told us, from Yahya, from Abu Salamah, he said: I asked ‘Aishah, may God be pleased with her, about the (night) prayer of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. ‘alaihi wasallam. Then ‘Aishah said: He, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prayed 13 rak’ahs. He prayed 8 rak’ahs, then witr. Then he prayed (again) two rak’ahs while sitting. If he is going to bow, he stands up and then bows and prays two rak’ahs between the call to prayer and the iqamah at the time of the dawn prayer.”
📚 [HR. Muslim no. 738]
▶️However, bearing in mind that there is a hadith which states that the witr prayer is the closing of the night prayer, it is best if the istikharah prayer is performed before the tahajjud prayer, so two rakaah of the istikharah prayer then make du’a of istikharah prayer then after that do the tahajjud and the last is witir prayers
“Narrated from Nafi’ from Ibn Umar from the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, he said: Make the Witr the end of the night prayer.”
📚[HR. Muslim no. 751]
And Allah knows best
