“When Allah intends good for someone, he makes him sees his own defect. When defects are known, only then is it possible to correct them. There are four steps in finding your own flaws”
1) شيخ بصير :
Having mentors whom you listen to. Mentors should be wise, knowledgeable and sincere.
2) صديقا صدوقا بصيرا:
Asking your “wise and sincere” friends to keep an eye on you and to advise you whenever they see you going down the wrong path.
3) من ألسنة اعدائه:
Learning from your enemy because enemies can highlight those aspects which a flattering friend won’t. Although their delivery of the advice will be wrong, the content might be right.
4) ان يخالط الناس:
Mixing with the people and observing them. When you meet with people and notice someone is manifesting jealousy, hate, anger, prejudice, arrogance, ego, etc – then you will immediately examine yourself and ask, “Do I have the same habit? If yes, then how ugly does this make me? How negative have I become?” By doing so, you will focus on your flaws even when observing the mistakes of others.Reference: احياء علوم الدين ٣/٦٤
(FYI: I edited the above advice from Imam Ghazālī slightly. This advice helped me a lot over the last decade and I hope this will help you all as well. This is a general advice for everyone, but especially important for students, activists, people in dawah, etc.)
