By : Sarah Lathiif 🇲🇨
The steps of success for a Muslim shows that success is a long, climbing and difficult. This can be seen in Surah Al-Ashr Allah Subhanahu wa Taala says :
{ وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِی خُسۡرٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡا۟ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡا۟ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ }
“For the sake of time. Indeed, humanity is in loss, except those who believe and do good deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.”
Imam As-Shafi’i commented on Al-Ashr’s surah,
“If people understand Surah Al-Ashr then that is enough for them.” In another expression, “If only this surah came down to humans, it would be enough for them.”
A short, comprehensive surah conveys the signs and steps of success.
And this surah is preceded by the importance of time, that success is limited by time, and opportunities are only in the world.
Because this world is the place and time for doing good deeds, while the results and rewards are in the afterlife.
Comprehensive success includes happiness, including victory in struggle and eternal success in this world and the hereafter.
Meanwhile, the steps shows that success is a long, climbing and difficult road. The path must be taken gradually and continuously.
The value, consequences, risks and results are certainly in line with success itself.
The Qur’an as a guide to human life mentions all these steps.
And Rasulullah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, who was mentioned by ‘Aisyah radhiyallahu anha, that his morals (Akhlaq) were the Qur’an, had gone through these steps perfectly.
Broadly speaking, there are 5 steps to success, namely as follows.
5 Steps to a Muslim’s Success :
1. Faith ✅
The first step that every human being who wants to be successful must fulfill is the steps of faith.Allah Subhanahu wa Taala has mentioned this steps to believers and the completeness of their characteristics in Surah Al-Mu’minun 1-11. The first verse states :
قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
“Truly those who believe have been lucky or successful”
2. Knowledge ✅
Knowledge is the second ladder to achieve success. Allah Subhanahu wa taala says :
“… surely Allah will raise (the degree of) those who believe among you and those who have been given knowledge to several degrees”
(Q.S.Al-Mujadalah : 11).It is clear that to achieve success and high levels you need at least two means, namely faith and knowledge.
Humans are divided into 4, in this case, the lowest have no faith and no knowledge, above them there are those who have knowledge but do not believe, and above them there are those who believe but have no knowledge.
And the most perfect level is those who believe and have knowledge.3. Good deeds ✅
This is the third steps of success. In many verses, people who are comprehensively successful, those who believe and do good deeds, include :إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ كَانَتۡ لَهُمۡ جَنَّٰتُ ٱلۡفِرۡدَوۡسِ نُزُلًا
“Indeed, those who believe and do good deeds, Paradise is provided for them as a place to live.”
📚 (Q.S Al-Kahf : 107).By good deeds, here we mean all deeds that are done well, that is, those that meet the requirements.
Charity is done sincerely for Allah and correctly according to the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, as stated by Fudhail bin Iyadh when interpreting the verse :
ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ أَيُّكُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلٗاۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡغَفُورُ
“Allah is the One Who created death and life, to test you, which of you has better deeds.”
📚 (Q.S. Al-Mulk : 2).4. Commitment to Truth ✅
This commitment to truth includes commitment to the truth in saying, doing good deeds and behaving. Allah says :
And say (Muhammad),“The truth comes from your Lord. Whoever wishes (to believe), let him believe. And whoever wishes (to disbelieve), let him disbelieve.”
📚 (Q.S. Al Kahf : 29)RasulAllah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said to Abu Dzar Al-Ghifari :
قلِ الحقَّ ، ولَو كانَ مُرًّا
“Say the truth even if it’s bitter.”
📕 (H.R. Ibn Hibban)Many people do righteous deeds, that is, do good deeds, but do not dare to say the truth, act correctly and convey the truth.
5. Patience ✅
Patience in all things, namely patience in obeying, patience in abandoning disobedience and patience in facing tests and slander.Patience is the highest human steps to achieve success which has been traversed by the prophets and apostles, especially the great prophets in “Ulul Azmi”, namely Prophet Nuh alaihissalam, Prophet Ibrahim alaihissalam, Prophet Musa alaihissalam, Prophet Isa alaihissalam and Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said :
فَٱصۡبِرۡ كَمَا صَبَرَ أُوْلُواْ ٱلۡعَزۡمِ
مِنَ ٱلرُّسُلِ وَلَا تَسۡتَعۡجِل لَّهُمۡۚ“So be patient (Muhammad) as the apostles were patient with steadfast hearts, and do not ask for a hasty punishment for them.”
📚 (Q.S. Al-Ahqaf : 35).So the high degree of patience is sometimes combined with the high degree of jihad.
{ وَلَنَبۡلُوَنَّكُمۡ حَتَّىٰ نَعۡلَمَ ٱلۡمُجَٰهِدِينَ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ وَنَبۡلُوَاْ أَخۡبَارَكُمۡ }
“And indeed, We will truly test you so that We know those among you who truly strive (jihad) and are patient; and We will test you.”
📚 (Q.S. Muhammad : 31).That’s steps after steps of success, hopefully we can take it. An Arabic proverb says :
من صبر ظفر
Who is patient will definitely be successful.
HadanAllah Wa Iyyakum Ajma’in
