THE DEVIL’S DECEPTION (Talbis Iblis)
➖➖➖
5️⃣ Devil’s Deception of Laypeople
➖➖➖
4️⃣ Committing Sins Excessively
➖➖➖Iblis entices laypeople to dwell into sins, and when they get reprimanded for these, they say things like: “I will not abandon immediate pleasure for future pleasure.” This is because of their ignorance.
Ibn Al-Jawzi (رحمه الله) assimilated these people to a person suffering from fever who is asked to eat honey, so he responds: “Fulfilling my immediate desire to eat honey is more important to me than my hope of a cure!”
These people should understand the reality of imãn. And Allaah’s promise of future pleasure is definite.
1️⃣ Some laypeople say: “Allaah is generous, His forgiveness is vast, and having hope (in Allaah) is from our religion.”
They consider their wishful thinking: “hope.” This is what destroyed most sinners.
Al-Farazdaq asked those around him once: “If I were to do something wrong towards my parents would they throw me in a blazing oven?” They said: “No, they would have mercy on you.” He said: ‘I trust my Lord’s mercy more than I trust theirs.”
This is utter ignorance. Allaah is merciful but not in the sense of being tender-hearted. Had He been tender-hearted, no bird would be slaughtered, no child would die, and no one would enter the hellfire.
2️⃣ Some of them say: “Scholars are the ones who must follow Allaah’s rules strictly, as for me I am not doing that bad.”
A scholar and a layperson are equally obligated to follow Shari’ah. And if a scholar commits a sin, this is not to be an excuse for laypeople to commit the same sin.
3️⃣ Some laypeople also say things like: “How bad is my sin for me to deserve to be punished?!, And who am I to be punished?! My sin does not harm Allaah, and my obedience does not benefit Him. His mercy is greater than my crime.”
This is a great foolishness. They think that Allaah only punishes someone who is of His status. By believing this they become defiant.
4️⃣ Others say: “I will repent, and I will rectify myself.”
How many foolish negligent people were kidnapped by death before seeking repentance? It is not of good discipline for a person to delay doing the right thing. What if repentance never happens?! Or what if it was not done correctly?! Or was it not accepted?! And even if it was accepted, the shame of committing the sin will continue forever. So the difficulty associated with repelling sinful thoughts is easier than the agony of performing repentance.
5️⃣ Some people repent and then go back to committing the same sin, so Iblis increases his effort to mislead them because of their weakness.
Al-Hasan said: “If the devil finds you to be a sinner, he will announce your demise. And if he finds you to be obedient (to Allaah) he will become fed up with you and reject you. And if he finds you fluctuating between obedience and sin, then he becomes eager to deceive you.”
[Talbis Iblis p.517-520]
May Allaah make us among those who constantly repent.
