DEPRESSION; AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE
➖➖➖
EPISODE 2️⃣: PREVENTING AND OVERCOMING DEPRESSION WITH ISLAM
➖➖➖Whatever void we feel in us is the symptom of a deformity in our spirits, and it is our duty to work on fixing the deformity. If not, the void will seek to fill itself with evil.
Depression is a mood we have no control over, and so is valid. What is not valid instead, is hopelessness.
Depression is a serious medical condition that can and will get worse without proper treatment. As it gets progressively worse in a person, it hinders the person’s daily activities, including their Salaah. It can lead the person to sin as the person desperately attempts various means to get some semblance of happiness. It is not ideal for a believer to get to this stage, but as previously established, it is a feeling that develops unconsciously.
1️⃣ First, we should always remember that Allaah (ﷻ) is in control of everything and that He only wants good for us. Every trial and affliction that affects a believer is Allaah’s way of bringing him closer to Him. This is always the base of every matter.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“If Allaah wills good for someone, He afflicts him with trials.”(Sahih al-Bukhari 5321)
As long as we have faith, He will decree only what is best for us in this world and in the Hereafter.
The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
“Wondrous is the affair of the believer, for there is good for him in every matter, and this is not the case with anyone but the believer. If he is happy, then he thanks Allaah and thus there is good for him. If he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus there is good for him.”
(Sahih Muslim 2999)
2️⃣ Then, we must recognize that though unconsciously, negative feelings are nurtured by our own minds.
3️⃣ Then, we should remember that whatever we are going through is just a phase that will definitely pass, no matter how long it takes.
We should seek our cure for depression in a holistic manner by addressing its physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects because it does not just affect one aspect of our lives, it affects all at once.
4️⃣ Combat it from the root cause.
The first step is to identify what has made the person depressed and correct his/her mindset about it.1. If a person is sad about the loss of something, he should rest assured that what his Lord has in store for him is similar to it or better than it, and if he is patient and accepts it, He has stored up for him something that is many times greater than what he has lost through this calamity.
2. He should think of someone who has it worse.
3. He should remember that thinking hard and grieving about his affliction won’t make things better, in fact, it would make them worse.
4. Though unconscious, falling into depression makes one to miss out on the reward for being patient.
5. If one nurtures one’s sadness to the point where it hinders him from the things he’s supposed to do, it makes his enemy rejoice, his friend sad; it makes Allaah angry and makes the shaytaan happy.
6. He should remember that Allaah is the Most Wise and loves His servant even more than a mother loves her child. He should know that Allaah would never let His servant pass through any hardship except as a source of reward or expiation.
7. Thus, he should realize that rather than grieve, he should rejoice praise Allaah for his condition.
It was narrated that The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
On the Day of Resurrection people will wish that their skins had to cut with scissors in this world, when they see the reward of those who were struck with calamity.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2402)To be continued… إن شاء الله.
