Tafseer ul Qur’aan
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
Juz 2-Surah Al Baqarah-164-Part-1
💡”Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth,[1] and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason.”
📍 [1] It is said that when Allah revealed the verse, ‘And your God is One God, there is no god save He,’ the polytheists, who had set up 360 idols around the Ka
bah, objected: ‘How can a single God suffice for this vast world?’ So Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala) revealed the verse: ‘Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth...’ to point out that the unity of creation proves the unity of the Creator. According to another interpretation the Quraysh asked the Jews and Christians about the miracles given to previous prophets. When they learnt of Musa’s staff and
Isa’s quickening of the dead, they demanded that Muhammad ﷺ produce similar miracles. So Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala) revealed this verse (Tabari). If one contemplates upon this verse, it will be understood that Allah is the only One worthy of worship and He is the Creator of each and every thing – [Durrul Manthur” V.1, p. 174]
It is indeed strange that the idolaters worship their false gods in spite of the fact that Allah created them, provides their sustenance, nurtures and nourishes them, grants them children and creates all the essentials for their eating and drinking.
What is even more astounding is when the idolaters of Makkah wer informed of Allah’s Oneness, they exclaimed, “What, have all the deities been made into One! This is indeed a strange thing.” [Surah Sad, verse 5]
A strange phenomenon of this world is that when something becomes a trend, then no matter how erroneous and evil it may be, because it is in vogue people consider it to be a good thing. It is incumbent upon every human being to worship Allah and no other. This is the religion of man which was preached and practiced by the father of man, Sayyidina Adam عَلَيْهِ سْلَامْ as well as by all th Prophets عَلَيْهِ سْلَامْ after him.
When Polytheism (shirk) became rife and. widespread, pecple became so accustomed to it that the call to monotheism: seemed strange and foreign to them.
The verse mentions such things which every person accepts to be totally in’ Allah’s control. These phenomena are such that their creation and continuance are solely dependant on Allah’s will no other being has jurisdiction over them.
This is the first sign discussed by Allah. Allah say in Surah Zumar “Definitely if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth they will say, Allah [verse 38]
Surah Ahqaf contains the verse. “Tell them, Show me what those whom you worship besides Allah have created from the earth? Do they share a partnership in the heavens? Bring forth a book which was before this one, or some piece of information! if indeed you are truthful” (verse 4)
Sayyid Qutb رحمه الله said, This unique Qur’ānic approach in addressing the human mind and heart tends to heighten man’s feelings and emotions and make him behold and contemplate the wonders of the Universe. Familiarity may have blunted man’s appreciation of these marvels, but the verses invite him to reflect on the world around, as if for the first time, with open eyes and eager senses and a conscious heart.
The physical world is full of beautiful mysteries and awe-inspiring events that have captivated many an eye and fascinated many a heart. The world is a boundless festival of mystery, splendour and beauty. The Heavens, the Earth, the planets, the stars, the galaxies, are all floating along their decreed orbits with incredible harmony, in a vast expanse of limitless space of dizzying dimensions.
Man has been fascinated by this vast gallery of wonders long before he was able to get a glimpse, through study and science, of how it works and what lies behind it. The cycle of day and night and the alternation of light and darkness, dawn and dusk, have sent a million shivers through the hearts and souls of men everywhere. For the believing heart, it is a daily marvel to behold, despite its familiarity; a constant reminder of Allah’s magnificence and glory.
Shaykh Abdrahmaan As Sa’di Comments, In the (creation of the heavens), with their great height and breadth, their precision and perfection, and what Allah has placed in them of the sun, moon, and stars, and how they mark time in the ordering of people’s affairs, and in the creation of (the earth) as a place where they could settle and abide, benefiting from everything in it and pondering it, there is an indication of Allah’s unique powers of creation and control; this highlights His immense power by which He created it; His wisdom by means of which He perfected it, designed it beautifully, and regulated it; and His knowledge and mercy by means of which He placed what He placed on earth of things that are beneficial to humankind, serving their interests and meeting their needs.
In all of that there is the most eloquent proof of His perfection and that He alone is deserving of worship, because He alone creates and controls, and takes care of His slaves’ affairs.
