1️⃣ HAIR ATTACHMENTS

It was narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) has cursed such a lady as artificially lengthening (her or someone else’s) hair or gets her hair lengthened.
(Bukhari, Vol. 7, Book 72, Hadith 819)

This is general in meaning and applies to anything that may be attached to the head or worn on it. Some of the scholars are of the view that it is haraam to attach string, fabric and the like to the hair; others are of the opinion that what is haraam is attaching hair to it.

The general and most acceptable view is that women are forbidden to add extensions to their hair, whether they are made of hair or anything else, if they could be mistaken for hair.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said: “The one who pretends that he has been given what he has not been given is just like the false one who wear two garments of falsehood.”
(Saheeh Bukhārī [5219], Kitāb un-Nikāh.)

Al-waasilah is the one who fixes hair extensions, that is, the one who joins the other hair to the woman’s hair. Al-mawsoolah is the woman who asks someone else to attach something to her hair and has it done for her.

What is meant by being cursed is being excluded and banished far away from the mercy of Allāh.

(Tafseer Ibn Katheer, Surah An-Nisaa’, 4:118)

The scholars have stated that every sin for which Allāh, (ﷻ), has decreed the punishment of being cursed is a major sin.

Based on this, it is prohibited to attach anything to any hair on the body to extend it. Also, by the second Hadeeth, it is also prohibited to put on wigs, as a person that does that pretends to have something he/she hasn’t been given.

However, tying coloured strings and the like to the hair is permissible, as the colours can’t deceive anyone into thinking they are the individual’s real hair, rather it is done for the purpose of beautification and adornment.

2️⃣ FALSE EYELASHES

False eyelashes may be semi permanent or temporary.

Temporary false eyelashes attach to the lid on a single strip while semi permanent eyelash extensions are individual lashes. They attach directly to your natural lashes, one at a time. This process takes several hours to complete.

False eyelashes come under the heading of hair extensions, as they involve attachment of hair that resembles the natural hair to the natural hair. As such, it is haram.

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (17/133):

“It is not permissible to use artificial nails, false eyelashes …, because of the harm that they do where they are attached to the body, and because they also involve deception and changing the creation of Allāh…”

It has also been proven that eyelash extensions can cause temporary or permanent loss of eyelashes and infection of the eyelid or cornea, and it is impermissible for one to inflict harm upon oneself.

And Allāh (ﷻ) says:

…وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ…

“…And make not your own hands contribute to [your] destruction.”
