IMPERMISSIBLE BEAUTIFICATION IN ISLAM’

EPISODE 3⃣ : ON HAIRS – PART 2️⃣/2️⃣ – HAIRCUTS

3️⃣ REMOVING THE HAIR OF THE BROWS
The action of removing the hair of the eyebrows is called al-nams. It is prohibited to remove the hair of the eyebrows.
It was narrated from the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ):
“Allāh has cursed the woman who does tattoos and the one who has them done, the woman who plucks eyebrows (al-namisah) and the one who has it done (al-mutanammisah), and the one who files her teeth for the purpose of beauty, altering the creation of Allāh.”
(Al-Bukhari, 5931; Muslim, 2125)
As previously established, any sin that incurs the curse of Allāh is haram and a major sin.
Al-nams means plucking the hair of the eyebrows. The Namisah is the one who performs the plucking, and the Mutanammisah is the one whose eyebrows are plucked. Scholars rule that the prohibition of removing hair of the brows is for all methods of removal (shaving, plucking, cutting or any other way).
With regards to plucking the hair between the eyebrows, scholars rule that it is permissible to pluck it, because it is not part of the eyebrows.
(Fataawa al-Lajnah (5/197))
4️⃣. QAZA’:
➖➖➖
The Prophet (ﷺ) was narrated to have seen a boy part of whose head had been shaved and part of it left. He told them not to do that and said: “Shave all of it or leave all of it .”
(Al-Nasai (5048) and Abu Dawud (4195))
Qaza’ was defined by Nāfi’ (رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ) in his saying:
“It is to shave a part of the head of a boy while leaving another part long.” He also said: “It is when a boy has his head shaved leaving a tuft of hair here and a tuft of hair there.”And he said: “As for leaving hair on the two temples and the nape of the neck, there is no harm, but Al-Qaza’ is to leave a tuft of hair on his forehead unshaved while there is no hair on the rest of his head, and also it is to leave hair on either side of his head.
(Reported by Al-Bukhāri no. 5920)
An-Nawawī stated: “The scholars have agreed (ijmā’) that the Qaza’ is hated where there are parts of the head shaved and other parts left with hair, unless it is done for medical reasons.”
(Sharh Sahīh Muslim 14/101)

5⃣. SHAVING OF THE HEAD FOR WOMEN
➖➖➖
There is some difference in the scholars’ opinion on women shaving their heads. Some of them say it is disliked while others say it is prohibited for a woman to shave her head.
Al-Mirdawi said in Al-Insaf: “It is disliked for a woman to shave her head without any valid excuse according to the correct view of the school of Fiqh. It was said that it is forbidden.”
“It is disliked for a woman to shave her head or cut her hair without excuse because it was narrated by Al-Khallaal with its chain of narrators on the authority of Qatadah that ‘Ikrimah said: “The Prophet, (ﷺ), prohibited that a woman shaves her head.” If there is an excuse like ulcers, then it is not disliked.”
(Kashshaf Al-Qina‘)
Ibn Abu Zayd Al-Qayrawani said in his book Ar-Risalah:
“The act of Sunnah is shortening the hair for women, and it is not permissible for women to shave their heads.”
The most general opinion, however, is that it is prohibited, except for a necessity.
