FASTING 6 DAYS IN SHAWWAAL
➖➖➖
Having Completed Ramadaan

Abu Ayyub reported:
The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said, “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadaan and then follows it with 6 days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted perpetually.”
(Sahih Muslim 1164)
Thawban reported: The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said, “Fasting the month of Ramadaan is like ten months of fasting and fasting six days of Shawwal is like two months of fasting. Thus, they are like fasting for a year.”
(Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2115; Graded Sahih by Al-Albani)
This indicates that fasting the month of Ramadaan, and then following it with 6 days of fasting in the month of Shawwaal is like fasting an entire year of obligatory fasts.
Fasting 6 days in Shawwaal is not obligatory, rather it is highly recommended.
And from its benefits is that it makes up for any deficiencies in the obligatory fasts.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: …If there is something defective in his obligatory prayers, then the Almighty Lord will say: See if My servant has any voluntary prayers that can complete what is insufficient in his obligatory prayers. The rest of his deeds will be judged the same way.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi 413; Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani)
The fasting of Shawwaal can be commenced on any day of the month other than the first day (because it is prohibited to fast on the day of Eid).
On the authority of Abu Ubaid (the slave of Ibn Azhar) who said: “I witnessed the Eid with Umar bin Al-Khattab who said, Allaah’s Apostle has forbidden people to fast on the day on which you break fasting (the fasts of Ramadaan) and the day on which you eat the meat of your sacrifices (the first day of Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha).”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1990)
The fast does not have to be done consecutively; and it cannot be combined with any pending Ramadaan fasts (i.e, intending one day’s fast to represent both the missed Ramadaan fast and the fast of Shawwaal); rather, it should be done separately.
The scholars have differed on how to go about fasting the 6 days of Shawwaal, when one is owing some days from the month of Ramadaan.
1️⃣ The first opinion is that the month of Ramadaan must be completed before fasting Shawwaal, because of the wording of the hadith:
“Whoever fasts the month of Ramadaan and then follows it with 6 days of fasting in the month of Shawwal,…”
They interpreted it to mean that one who owes some days of Ramadaan has not fasted the entire month.
They said that if however, the days of Ramadaan to be made up are many and take up the month of Shawwaal, then you may fast the 6 days after that, even if in the month of Dhul Qa’dah, and you will have the reward In’shaa’Allaah.
(Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 20/19–Islamqa.com)
2️⃣ The second opinion is that one may fast the 6 days of Shawwaal, and make up the missed Ramadaan fasts later on.
The argued that the missed Ramadaan fast can be made up at any time throughout the year, so the fasting of Shawwaal should be done first.
Some of the scholars allowed this without restriction, while some said that the fast of Ramadaan should be given priority, but there is no problem in fasting Shawwaal first.
Preference should be given to the obligatory fast.
And Allaah (ﷻ) knows best.
Let us hasten to the rewards and benefits of fasting 6 days in Shawwaal.
And may Allaah (ﷻ) ease our affairs, have mercy on us and guide us through the straight path.
آمين
