Abu Umamah Narrated:
I said, “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), tell me a deed to do.” The Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), said, “ You must fast, for there is nothing equal to it.”
Sunan al-Nasā’ī 2223, Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani

NOTES 📝
1. Sawm (fasting) has a great virtue and reward reward, and the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, were eager to do good and to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the best deeds. In this hadith, Abu Umamah, said: “I said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, tell (command) me a deed to do.” And he greeted: “You must fast,” meaning: be keen on obligatory fasting, and increase voluntary fasts; “For there is nothing equal to it”, that is, there is no match for it in reward and virtue, and it will be a reason for your entry into Paradise.
2. From this hadith, we learn that there is no equal to fasting in reforming hearts and purifying souls, victory over the evil ones among jinns and mankind, raising ranks and expiating bad deeds, mercy among Muslims and feeling for them. Also, there is no equal to it in raising souls, reforming societies and equality among people, reforming both the bodies and preserving their well-being, and maintaining their health, and other things that are included in this great hadith. Imam al-Manawi wrote: “As it, i.e. fasting, strengthens the heart and intellect, and increases in intelligence and honorable morals, and if a person fasts, he gets used to eating and drinking less, and his desires are suppressed, and the materials of sins are removed from their origin, and he enters goodness from every face, and good deeds surround him from every side.” – Fayd al-Qadir Sharh al-Jami` al-Saghir
3. This hadith does not however mean that fasting is preferred to all other good deeds at all times and in situations. The response of the Prophet ﷺ is appropriate to the person and is situation at that time as evidenced from his response to similar questions where he mentioned, for example, Prayer on time. So for some people, fasting is better for them, and for some people, jihad is better for them, and so on, and one of the actions may be better at a time than other deeds at that time, and it may be at another time that is better than it.
O Allah, keep us safe until Ramadhan, keep Ramadhan safe for us, and accept it from us. Indeed You are the All-Hearing and All-Knowing … Ãmeen
